Friday 10th April 2009Baku City Neighbourhood ~ PicturesThis week a few of us wandered around the local neighbourhood and spent the afternoon taking pictures. We got many curious looks from the local community. The majority of people thought we were media, I guess they don't see many people taking pictures just because they like taking them. Spring is definitely on the way! The fruit and vegetable stands are already starting to sell some of my favourite spring/summer fruits. Friday 20th March 2009Novruz BayramyToday is the first day of the Novruz Bayramy public holiday in Azerbaijan which is celebrated from 20th - 28th March. Novruz in Azerbaijan (Azeri: Novruz) refers to the celebration of the traditional Iranic new year holiday of Nowruz in the Republic of Azerbaijan. Novruz is celebrated throughout the countries of the Middle East and Central Asia such as in Iran, Azerbaijan, Afghanistan and among Kurds in Turkey. Wednesday 4th March 2009New Marriott Hotel in BakuThis is the new Marriott hotel that is going to be built in place of the Hotel Absheron. Many other hotels, residential buildings and business centres are being built all over Baku, you can see some of the pictures here.

Tuesday 24th February 2009Hotel Absheron Demolition ~ UpdateThey are making good progress with the Hotel Absheron demolition, all of the room floors have been removed now. They are currently in a big concrete pile on the floor which they have started to clear away. Note the digger in the background of the picture below, i'm not sure what it is balancing on?! If you look closely at the picture below you can see the side of a yellow digger. This one had a bit of an accident. Apparently it toppled over onto it's side and it's been laying there amongst the rubble ever since. I'm not sure how they ...

Thursday 19th February 2009A Surprise VisitorMr stitchitch sent me these pictures of a surprise visitor at the entrance to the Terminal where they work. It seems this guy was out for an early morning stroll and thought he'd see what this oil & gas plant malarkey was all about. He loitered around for a little bit waiting for food which he gratefully received and then he was on his way! :O)
